At what cost the punishment? The cure?

We need prison reform! The system is broken and recidivism is high because there arenʻt enough rehabilitative supports and services for people while they are incarcerated and afterwards, when assistance and guidance is most helpful for re-integration into society.

We must look at partnerships and programs to not only rehabilitate people while incarcerated, but also assist them initially and check-in while they are getting back into society.

We also need to look at what is happening with our incarcerated ‘ohana on the continent. Their welfare and well-being IS our kuleana. While their crime may have put them in jail, we put them in jail far away from their homes and families and THAT is a crime.

How can we expect people to do better when they aren't given the basic necessary tools, support or education to do so?
